ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kirsten Westphal is a sculptor and artist based in New York City and the Hudson Valley. Her creative practice spans various scales, from expansive room-sized installations of wooden constructions to diminutive, more ephemeral suspended pieces assembled from paper and metal. This diversity often reflects her surroundings, the demands of different studio environments, and time constraints.
Drawing is crucial to Kirsten’s artistic process and is deeply intertwined with her sculptural works which often start as gestural drawings and smaller sculptural objects that are developed and interconnected into larger
scales as the work evolves.
Her working practice involves constructing large forms from these smaller constituent parts—conceptualized as an aggregate, where each component is integral to the overall form. The dialogue between seemingly inconsequential parts being necessary to the whole invites viewers to explore the interplay between individual elements and the larger whole. Once assembled, and placed in dialogue with the space, her work invites the viewer to a moment of contemplation, consideration, and curiosity.
Kirsten received her BFA from The Cleveland Institute of Art in 1989 and MFA from Columbia University in 1991.
